Musings on the FDA

In the last 12 days the Food and Drug Administration has issued six consumer product recalls. One of these recalls was for cosmetics. Five were food products. The latest is Guangdayuan Brand Dried Sweet Potato, a product from China. Other recalls have been in the areas of medical devices and prescription medications.

I don’t know whether to be glad, sad or worried. Should I be glad that the FDA seems to be doing its job in the area of overseeing consumer and medical products? Should I be sad that food products can still be contaminated by bacteria, potential allergens and other unwholesome materials? Should I be worried that China is still exporting potentially dangerous food?

Overall I think that I’m glad. Just think of the small number of products that are recalled and the overwhelming number of products marketed in our global economy. Of course, my cynical voice speaks up and wonders if some products slipped though the FDA net. Perhaps they have and will continue to do so. But so many more didn’t and won’t.

What worries me more is the FDA’s role in the drug and device approval process. Here, I believe, the FDA does only a fair job. While the approval process is lengthy and arduous, it is still fraught with loopholes.

The solution? I don’t know. I wish I did. For now I just have an opinion that it needs to improve.
